If CBD isn’t that far removed from its psychoactive cousin THC, does it carry the same risk for potential addiction, whether it be physical or mental?

CBD flower, and CBD in general, is not addictive, nor is it habit-forming. This is because CBD itself does not interact with the brain in the same way addictive substances do, and thus does not create a dependence for the user.

Just because CBD isn’t addictive doesn’t mean you can throw caution to the wind when using it, though. There are still many things to consider when deciding whether or not a CBD product is right for you aside from dependence. Still, it’s beneficial to understand just how CBD works and what you can do to take advantage of it safely.

Is Smoking Hemp Flower Addictive?

No, smoking hemp flower will not cause addiction to CBD or to any other substance. Because CBD itself doesn’t cause physical addiction in the way other substances might, smoking hemp flower won’t cause your body to depend on it.

It’s important to remember that hemp flower and CBD flower aren’t necessarily the same thing. Though CBD flower is hemp flower, not all hemp flower is CBD flower; CBD flower is specifically bred and grown to have high levels of the cannabinoid, differentiating it from its more basic predecessor.

Smoking hemp flower that contains little to no CBD won’t even expose you to the cannabinoid much in the first place.

Even if you’re smoking CBD hemp flower or another CBD-rich product, though, you won’t experience addiction. In fact, many individuals find CBD use advantageous when it comes to quitting other addictive substances, including tobacco and alcohol, among others.

Is CBD Addictive?

As far as we know right now, CBD is not addictive, though more research into how it impacts the brain and body long-term is needed to say there’s no risk with complete certainty.

To understand why CBD isn’t addictive, it helps to have a good sense of how addiction actually works

When substances that impact the brain’s functioning and impairment, like THC or alcohol, enter the body, they cause euphoric, intoxicating effects. These effects are pleasurable to the brain, which reacts accordingly.

Much like a tasty meal can stimulate our brain and make us want more, drugs and alcohol create a strong dopamine release that leaves the mind and body seeking another round.

This process has a practical purpose; eating something delicious and calorie-dense, for instance, would be a behavior that would be very beneficial to our early ancestors, and thus it makes sense for the brain to encourage this behavior in the future.

However, the brain can’t necessarily differentiate between potentially beneficial pleasures and potentially harmful ones. The more an individual consumes an addictive substance, the more the brain begins to rely on it to release dopamine.

Dopamine doesn’t just make us feel happy, it’s a vital part of many mental and physical bodily processes. A lack of dopamine means the body can’t function as it’s supposed to.

As a result, an addicted mind will begin to cause cravings for the substance in question. Avoiding the substance causes physical and mental discomfort, pain, and distress. The body perceives a lack of the drug (and dopamine) as a threat to its safety and productivity, so it’s a real challenge to stay away from and quit.

CBD isn’t considered addictive because it does not cause this reaction within the brain in the first place. While it can help relax you and eliminate physical pain, CBD does not create an intoxicating effect on the mind, meaning it never grows to depend on it to function.

Is CBD Flower Habit Forming?

No, CBD flower is not habit forming. Because CBD is not an addictive substance, using CBD flower regularly won’t lead to a physical or mental dependence, so it’s safe to use it daily if you’d like.

In fact, it’s actually recommended that you use your CBD products, whether they be hemp flower or something else, regularly or daily. Regular use is perhaps the best way to maximize the potential benefits of CBD.

Is CBD Habit Forming?

CBD itself is not habit forming, nor are the products it gets incorporated into (unless they contain high levels of THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid found in marijuana).

CBD does not compel the brain to react in the way it might to psychoactive or impairing substances; sudden spikes in the amount of dopamine released in the brain are the seeds of addiction and habit, but CBD bypasses this process entirely.

Instead of causing impairment, CBD interacts with the body in different ways. It binds to receptors in the endocannabinoid system, directly impacting both immune and nervous-system functions (like inflammation), but not overwhelming the brain with psychoactive effects.

Can You Feel the Effects of CBD Flower?

You can indeed feel the effects of CBD flower so long as you smoke enough (taking a single inhale, for instance, likely won’t deliver enough of the substance to produce noticeable effects).

Inhalation is one of the fastest-acting consumption methods for CBD, so smoking CBD hemp flower is actually one of the best ways to feel effects noticeably and quickly.

Most users feel the results of their flower within about 15-20 minutes of smoking, but they might kick in even sooner, especially if it’s your first time smoking.

Is CBD Flower Psychoactive?

No, CBD flower is not psychoactive. Though it does produce noticeable results related to both the mind and body, it does not cause impairment in the way THC does.

The word “psychoactive” is generally used to describe substances that affect coordination, memory, speech, and other similar activities. Drugs and alcohol are, therefore, considered psychoactive.

Though CBD does impact the mind and therefore may sometimes be referred to as psychoactive, the actual definition of the word suggests otherwise. CBD will not get you high regardless of what type of product you’re using – that is, unless your product contains high levels of THC at the same time.

What Happens if You Smoke CBD Everyday?

Smoking CBD everyday can help you maximize the potential benefits of your product; consistently providing the body with another dose of CBD can help it continuously battle pain, inflammation, anxiety, and other common afflictions that CBD is often used to treat.

Using CBD everyday isn’t problematic itself, but for some, regular smoking can cause some physical side effects that are worth considering.

Frequent smoking may cause wheezing or coughing, for instance, not because of the CBD in your product, but because of the smoke itself. If you find smoking everyday to be irritating, you may want to consider incorporating other CBD products, like oils or edibles, into your routine as well.

Takeaway: Safe to Use, Safe to Stop

One of the best things about CBD is its versatility and flexibility. Unlike many other treatment options commonly used to manage chronic health concerns, CBD is unlikely to cause side effects, and it isn’t habit-forming.

That means that it’s possible to start and stop using your CBD products as you please based on your needs.

It is important, however, to note that it’s usually best to use CBD regularly rather than occasionally, at least if you’d like to experience consistent benefits from your products.

Taking CBD regularly can help you tackle pre-existing symptoms, but it can also help you stave off new ones that may present themselves in the future.

Even if you’re not using CBD to treat a mental or physical health condition, rest assured that regular use of the substance won’t cause negative effects, and you won’t find yourself relying on CBD to feel relaxed or productive.

Of course, choosing the right CBD product(s) for you goes a long way in ensuring that your experience is as beneficial as you want it to be regardless of your goals.

Because CBD isn’t regulated by the FDA, it’s up to consumers to ensure what they buy is worth their money, safe, and high-quality. If it sounds like a lot of work, that’s because it is!

I was born with Cystic Fibrosis, and although it is incurable, CBD and THC have been allowing me to live my life as a healthy adult now for years. For that reason, I’ve dedicated my career to spreading the good news about cannabinoids. Currently, I work for a vertically integrated cannabis company called Unrivaled Brands that operates in California, Oregon, and Nevada. Previously, I worked on two cannabis farms in northern California, one of which was located in the famous Humboldt County. I’ve also managed a medical cannabis delivery service in Marin County, California. I created CBD Facilitator to share what I’ve learned, and to recommend the best products that I have found in this chaotic market.
