Can I Drink Water Right After Taking CBD Oil?

If you’re a regular user of CBD oil, you might wonder whether food and water are working with you or against you in terms of producing the results you need.

Fortunately, it’s perfectly okay to drink water (or another beverage) after taking CBD oil, even if you’ve taken it sublingually rather than orally. Water and food won’t interfere with CBD, especially because sublingual consumption works by absorbing CBD into the bloodstream directly and rapidly.

Just because you can drink water right after doesn’t mean you have to or that you’ll even want to, but knowing when it’s safe to do so can help you avoid wasting product or time. You do still have to give your product time to do some actual absorbing, though, before you can move on.

How Long Does It Take for CBD Oil to Work Under the Tongue?

In most cases, you can expect to feel the effects of CBD oil within 15 minutes or so of consumption. You may even notice the effects in just a few minutes.

sublingual consumption is one of the fastest ways to reap the benefits of your CBD oil. That’s because there are few obstacles for the CBD in your product to overcome before entering your body and bloodstream.

When you place CBD oil under your tongue, it is quickly dissolved and broken down. The active ingredients–CBD and other cannabinoids, in this case– are then rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream.

This reality is why things like cough drops or other sublingual medications and supplements exist. Sometimes, it’s just not realistic to wait 30 to 60 minutes to feel the results of your product, especially if you’re using it as a medication.

How Long Should You Hold CBD Under Your Tongue?

Ideally, you should try to hold CBD oil under your tongue for a minute or so. After holding it under your tongue, you’ll likely notice that some of your product has dissolved; you can wash down what lingers with water or simply swallow it.

The longer you can hold your CBD product under your tongue, the better, but it’s often not necessary to do so for more than a few minutes. After all, there’s only so much CBD in a single dose of product.

Holding your product under your tongue for longer likely won’t significantly alter your results. However, failing to hold the product at all means you don’t give your body the chance to absorb as much as possible.

The tissue under the tongue acts as a semi-permeable barrier (that is, it acts as a barrier should, but also allows substances to pass through and be absorbed).

Simply swallowing your product bypasses this opportunity to directly expose your body to CBD; instead, your CBD oil will be subject to degradation as it works its way through your digestive system.

How Long Should You Wait to Drink Water After Taking CBD Oil?

There’s no need to wait an extended period of time to drink water after taking CBD oil, even if you consume it sublingually. So long as you’ve given the CBD oil a chance to sit under your tongue (for about 30 to 60 seconds), it’s safe to wash down what’s left with water.

The only potential risk is washing away product that might linger, but the difference in results you’ll notice from doing so likely won’t be significant.

Likewise, drinking water after using CBD won’t lessen the intensity of the effects you experience. Drinking won’t “dilute” your product, especially because the CBD itself that you’re consuming is being absorbed under your tongue rather than through your digestive tract.

Will Drinking Water Diminish the Effects of CBD Oil?

Drinking water does not diminish the effects of CBD oil unless you haven’t taken the steps to allow your product to work before taking a sip. For instance, if you place CBD oil under your tongue and immediately take a drink of water, you’ll be rinsing away the bulk of your product before it gets a chance to absorb.

In general, though, consuming water shouldn’t have any impact on the way you feel from your CBD oil. In fact, you might find it necessary to have a drink after using your oil, especially if it’s left unpleasant remnants or tastes in your mouth.

If you feel like you need some water, have some. It’ll likely make your experience more enjoyable if you aren’t dehydrated!

Can I Eat After Using CBD Oil?

It’s safe to eat after using CBD oil so long as you’ve given it some time to absorb. Depending on how you’re consuming your CBD oil, it might be advantageous to wait a few minutes before sitting down for a bite.

If sublingual consumption is your method of choice, you’ll want to be sure your CBD oil has had adequate time to sit under your tongue. As we know, the longer you let your oil sit, the more CBD can be absorbed into the blood and the more intense your results will be.

Eating too soon might mean that you’re swallowing a lot of your product rather than allowing it to absorb. While eating CBD oil or another CBD product still produces results, they tend to be much more subtle and take longer to kick in.

Once you’ve swallowed or otherwise disposed of the excess oil in your mouth, though, you should be able to eat regularly without any problems.

In other words, eating won’t interfere with the product you’ve just taken in any way. It won’t make it less intense, won’t slow things down, and it won’t increase your odds of experiencing side effects.

That’s part of the beauty of sublingual CBD consumption – it bypasses a lot of the problems that normally limit CBD’s potential, including interaction with food and drink in the stomach.

Final Thoughts

While it may seem too good to be true, it’s very safe to drink and eat soon after taking CBD oil, even if you consume it sublingually (under the tongue).

The only thing you really need to worry about is making sure your CBD oil gets time to fully absorb. Fortunately, this only takes about a minute or two.

Once you’ve done that, you can proceed drinking and eating as you normally would. In fact, you can even use food or water to wash down what’s left of your product or get the taste out of your mouth.

No matter what, though, it’s important to have good-quality products that reliably produce the results you need. A big part of that is being an educated consumer and knowing what works for you.

I was born with Cystic Fibrosis, and although it is incurable, CBD and THC have been allowing me to live my life as a healthy adult now for years. For that reason, I’ve dedicated my career to spreading the good news about cannabinoids. Currently, I work for a cannabis distribution company called Humble & Fume which operates in California. Previously, I worked on two cannabis farms in northern California, one of which was located in the famous Humboldt County. I’ve also managed a medical cannabis delivery service in Marin County, California. I created CBD Facilitator to share what I’ve learned, and to recommend the best products that I have found in this chaotic market.
